Description : Rectangular storage basket on bottom made of splint ash covered with bark and decorated with natural and dyed quills on front and sides. Back is "V-shaped" and the front of it also decorated in natural and dyed quill design. Sewn together with grass.
Commentaires : As the fur trade between the Aboriginal people of Canada and the settlers began to decline in the nineteenth century, the production of quillwork decorated birch bark products became an essential source of income for many Native families. A wide variety of items were produced for trade including boxes of various sizes, baskets, place mats, pincushions, wallets, match holders and straight-razor cases. The most popular item was the lidded box, which could be specifically decorated by the maker to incorporate the recipient's initials into the design. The decoration of this basket includes the chevron motif on the rectangular bottom as well as the stepped motif on the high back. This particular decoration was extremely popular throughout the eighteenth century and beyond.
