Description : | Shovel with deep scoop and short handle made of one single piece of wood. |
Commentaires : | This shovel may have been employed for one of two purposes: shovelling apples or grain. In the past, it was believed that anything which came in contact with apples had to be made of wood; otherwise it would hasten their spoiling and compromise the taste. It was for this reason that all tools used in the production of cider and apple butter were known as treen-ware, tools made completely of trees without using nails or screws. Similarly, shovels used in grain processing were also composed of treen-ware, this was simply to avoid creating sparks which could start a fire while collecting wheat from the treading area. |
