Description : | This is a square wooden music box with an upper lid on hinges. There is a brass tang on the front where coins were placed. On one side adjacent to the side with the coin slot there is a detachable metal handle. The main body of the mechanism inside is a rectangular metal assembly set horizontally inside the box. There is a twin set of combs mounted on top. The teeth of both combs face outward away from each other perpendicular to the main body. A metal disc could be mounted over top of the combs, much like a record player. |
Commentaires : | This is a Regina disc music box. The disc music box was developed in the late 19th century following the cylinder music box. The cylinder music box had the music fixed on the cylinder, while a disc music box was able to switch the metal disc holding the music much like a record player. Disc music boxes produced sound when the disc was brushed by the comb. This was somewhat more complex in disc music boxes because a double comb system was used. The disc music box was driven by mechanical means such as springs and did not use electric power. The disc music box had the great advantage of being able to change the music that a music box could play. They could be modified like this example to be coin operated. The disc music box first appeared in Germany in 1886. The Polyphon Company of Germany was one of the early companies to sell disc music boxes, and they founded the Regina Company in New Jersey in the early 1890's. Disc music boxes were popular during the period of 1890-1910 but were superseded by other music playing devices like the gramophone. A similar Regina music box in the 1898 Sears, Roebuck & Co. Catalog sells for $78.95 and extra "tune sheets" sell for 76 cents each. |
