Description : | ten knives and twelve forks of exceptionally large size and in the "king's pattern" (an elaborate pattern used as early as the 18th century). the forks are three-tined and very sharp; the knife and fork shafts are made of steel. the metal on the handles is definitely not silver or silver plate, pewter or sheffield plate; it would appear to be an alloy called "argentine" composed of tin and antimony which was used as plate metal. "argentine" was introduced about 1833; william hutton & sons are credited as the first to use it. it was never used extensively in england.wooden box for silverware |
