Description : an elaborately carved crooked knife handle which never had a blade in it. looking down at the top and moving from the front to thte back, it has a deer, the initials jmc and 1881 carved between 2 snakes. at the end of the handle are 2 hearts. on one side there is a fish a beaver, and a bird on the other side is a dog, a cat, and a squirrel.
Fonctions : this handle was found in the bathurst tracadie area. j.m. christmas was a micmac indian according to ruth whitehead, from nova scotia museum, he may have lived in new brunswick or traded on a trade route from cape breton. the handle was made as a trade item. this artifact was purchased with funds pro vided by the tecollotte foundation and the beaverbrook foundation.
