Description : | a male indian wearing a feathered head piece, consisting of 11 feather. the body is a square block with a rectangular piece cut out. the statue has neither arms nor legs. the eyes are small nose flat and mouth is ? long black hair is framing the face. (kd 19920904). this is a very important artifact because it ties into other carved items by polchais, of the kingsclear maliseet indian band, at kings landing and at the york-sunbury museum. however this is the only interpretation of a native carved by a native folk artist. it is significant that he has used this figure ot a match holder for the match is lt by striking the face of the native who must stoically accept the sulphuric blow. at the same time, the white man who used the figure must strike the native every time he lights a match.
