Description : | a pre-loyalist pine long case clock with a brass dial and a 30 hour brass movement. the 30 hour movement is a pendulum clock powered by a 9 pound weight and it strikes the hour using a count wheel system. the pendulum has a length of 39.14 inches which produces a one second beat. the square brass dial with the name ÒkiddÓ and the town ÒmaltonÓ indicate the clock movement maker and his place of residence. cases were normally made by someone other than the movement maker. the workshops in the colonies were not as well equipped as in england so several compromises were made. the case is made from native pine and it is held together with nails only since glue technology was poor or unavailable. the finish is original and is likely a soft linseed oil base finish. the waist door is odd since it is hinged on the left hand side - normally on the right hand side. |
