Description : | This is a vintage field telephone in a light colored wooden box with metal fittings at each corner. When opened it has a separate earpiece and mouthpiece, black in color. The phone has three large cylindrical batteries set in the lower area. |
Commentaires : | This telephone is believed to have been used by work crews who could get in touch with their dispatchers by connecting to overhead wires that ran parallel to the tracks. Telephone lines were used by railroads as early as 1879 to help dispatchers communicate. More reliable and effective telephone systems that emerged in the early 20th century increased the use of telephones by the railroads. The batteries that are included were made by the Burgess Company. This company was started in 1920 and indicates that the telephone was used around the second quarter of the 20th century. |
