Description : | Chatham grain cleaner - wooded painted red with yellow and green design painted on it; metal hand crank with a wooden handle |
Commentaires : | A Grain Cleaner's purpose was to remove the actual grain from the chaff and other detritus. Even today how clean your grain is influences the price, the cleaner the better. Though historically speaking certain grains have had fairly negative connotations. Underperforming Roman legions for example would often be given bread made from barley instead of wheat. https://encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/Grain+Cleaner#:~:text=a machine for removing dust, equipped with steel beaters rotates. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qj5vg2fjOtk&list=PLIkaZtzr9JDkCHpSx2Kf2XWRcgqjClDff&index=12 |
Fonctions : | This grain cleaner was used to separate grain from chaff. It is hand cranked and has a series of trays inside which rotate and filter the chaff out. Before the invention of this machine, grain was put on blankets and were tossed around resulting in the wind blowing away the dint. |
