Description : | The abandonment of branch lines and creation of high throughput elevators have streamlined and upgraded the system, enhancing its capacity to handle and move grain. The technical problems experienced in the 1960s and 1970s " the system's inability to move the grain the Wheat Board was selling " have largely been rectified. Since the repeal of the Crow Rates, railways have invested in improvements in track and have upgraded equipment. Grain handling on the prairies has been consolidated. The inland terminal system enables the railways to pick up more grain with fewer stops. As a result, railway equipment, especially hopper cars, can be used more efficiently; they can make more round trips from prairie to port in a season, effectively moving more grain. |
