Description : Metal frame, wood rollers. The frame consists, from top to bottom, of a hand wheel screw which passes through the frame and into thye elliptical leaf sporing. The elliptical leaf spring is made of six curved metal bars of graduated size, each stacked joined on the other, the larger as on the bottom and the smallest on the top. There are three wooden rollers, mounted on top of each other, below the spring. The middle has a piece of white linen material, called holland, attached to a slit in the roller. A cog wheel and a wheel with a wooden handle are mounted on the right side of the machine and turn the rollers. Two grooved bar extend from from the front of the frame at the same level as the lowest roller. The grooved bars provide a slot for the drop table. There are four legs on the frame with two cross bars running from the front two legs to the back two legs. Another cross bar runs from side and has 4 branches which each join to a leg. There is a caster on each leg. The words 'DIANMOND A MANGLE' are written across the top bar of the frame. The edges of the frame have gold coloured decorative liones painted on them. A mangle was mused to smooth and polish dry or damp dry laundry by passing it around a roller. This mangle is an upright model ansd could have been used in the home or hotel. Mangles were sometimes used as a wringer to get water out of wet washing. On a mangle with three rollers, clothes were laid within a 'holland' sheet which was attached to the middle roller. (Holland is a smooth hard wearing linen fabric). Sheets and clothes were carefully wound around the roller while the top and bottom rollers gave constant pressure. The elliptical spring and screw regulated the pressure on the rollers.
