Description : NUTMEG GRINDER: Metal. It consists of a grater with a wood handle and a holder (for nutmeg nut) with a cork handle. The two pieces are attached to each other by metal frame. The grater is a hollow half cylinder with open ends. The rounded surface of the cylinder has the grating blades on it and is mounted faxcing the nut holder. The blades are small dome shaped projections with a plus shaped hole cut in the top of each. The wooden handle is attached to the flat surface of the grater, perpendicular to it. The handle is bulbous on the end with a concavely narrowed neck. A groove runs along the centre of the length of the inside of the flat side of the grater. A circular loop is located at either end of the groove. (The frame is attached to the groove and held in place by the loops.) The nut holder is a hollow, oval shaped cylinder closed at one end and open at the end next to the grater. The nutmeg nut is inserted into the holder through an oval hole in the body of the cylinder. A clamp inside the cylinder pushes the nutmeg against the grater. The clamp is a metal plate the shape and size of a cross sectiopn of the inside of a cylinder. A rod is attached to the centre of one side of the plate. The rod extends through the closed end of the cylinder. A cone shaped cork with a flat top is attached toi the end of the rod, forming a handle. A spring surrounds the rod inside the cylinder. Before inserting the nut the handle is pulled out. The nut is dropped into the hole between the plate on the clamp and the grater. When the handle is released the spring forces the plate to hold the nut against the grater. A rectangular shaped frame attaches the grater to the nut holder. The short ends and one side of the rectangle are rectangular in shape. The fourthside is a rod which is inserted into the groove in the greater., The grater can be moved back and forth along the rod. The opposite side of the frame has an oval protrusion into which the end of the nut holder is attached. 'EDGAR M'F'G' CO. PAT AUG. 1891' is embossed on this side of the frame. To operate the grater, the nut is inserted as previously discussed. One hand grasps the nut holder the other the handle of the grater. The grater is then moved back and forth along the rod, causing the nut to be grated. MEASUREMENTS: 12.5cm x 13.5cm x 4.7cm.
