Description : BRACE - This tool is a ratchet brace. A brace is a tool for boring. It consists of a chuck, a ratchet, a crank and a head or hand hold. The chuck holds the bit. This chuck is cylindrical in shape with slight enlarging towards the jaw end. It is 7.2 cm long and 11.0cm in circumference at its widest point. It has six bands of lines etched around the circumference. The bands vary in width from 0.2cm to 0.6cm. They increase in width from the jaws towards the ratchet. The jaws extend 1.5cm from the chuck and are split. The ratchet is located next to the chuck. It sits at at a right angle to the chuck. It enables a rotary motion to be maintained while the handle is moved back and forth instead of in a complete circle. The ratchet brace can therefore be operated in a corner. The crank extends from the ratchet. It is 'U' shaped and round in cross section with a circumference of 4.3cm wooden handle is located at the base of the 'U'. The handle is shaped like a round cylinder. The crank runs through the centre of the handle, which is wrapped with black tape. A second wooden handle or head is mounted to a metal base, which is attached to the end of the crank. The head and metal base are parallel to te side of the 'U'. The metal base is rectangular in shape with rounded corners. The wooden hed is attached to the base by four rivets. It is rectangular in shape with rounded corners and a slightly rounded top. There are splotches of red and orange paint on the head. The head is cracked through the middle.; width 18 cm; length 34.3 cm
