Description : Fanning mill - This artifact is a machine used to separate chaff from kernels. The frame of this grain mill consists of four corner posts and a number of horizontal cross pieces. The corner posts are 119.0cm high, 3.0cm wide and 5.8cm thick. They are not vertical. The two front posts lean towards the back two,posts and vice versa. The bases of the posts are 88.0 cm apart on either side of the mill, while the tops of the posts are 41.5cm apart on either side. The distance between the two front posts is 77.0cm. The lower ends of the posts on each side of the mill are bolted to pieces of wood which extend from the front to the back and form a base 15.0cm high. Wooden tray FS.985.0008.00l0 sits in the space between wood. A wooden trough is mounted at the top of the frame. It is painted red. The frame of the trough is 77.0cm long, 72.5cm wide and 19cm deep. There is an opening in them base of the front of the trough. The opening is 7.0cm m A piece of sheet metal covers the opening. A green trough is located below the red one. It is 74.5cm long, 100.cm wide and 19.5cm deep. It sits in the frame at an angle. The front end is higher than the back. The back of the trough is open. Below the greeen trough is a green drum. 'WINNER MILL Manufactured by American Grain Separator Co. MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. ' is written in the front of the drum. ('Winner Mill' is written in red letters. The other writing is in black letters.) The background for the writing is a yellow fan. The fan is outlined by three lines. The two outside lines are black. The middle line is red. The ends of the drum are open. A wooden fan can be seen inside the drum. The drum has a diameter of 42.5cm. A trough is attached to the back end of the drumn. It is also painted green. A screen is attached to the frame below the drum. '5 8 . ', 10' is written in the front end odf the screen. The screen is mounted over a set of riffles. A cross piece of the frame directly below thre rifffles has 'MFD IN U.S.A. writen on it. The wooden tray FS.985.0008.0010 sits below the cross piece. A wooden housing for the belt drive is located on the side of the mill. It is 196.5cm tall, 19.5 cm wide,. 42.5cm deep. A door 71.5cm tall is attached to the bottom front of the housing. One of the metal drive wheels can be seen inside the housing through the door. A strip of shee tt metal is nailed to the housing above the door. It is 74.0cm tall. There are eight rows of pencil marks near the upper end of the metal. The marks are tally marks and consist of a series of four lines with a fifth line through the others. These lines apparently represent the number of bushels of grain cleaned.) There are also arithmetic calculations done in pencil on the sheet metal. The housing is open above the sheet metal exposing the other metal belt drive wheel. A wooden pulley wheel is attached to the upper end of the outer side of the outside of the housing. This pulley is attached by means of a rubber belt to another; Paint; width 118 cm; height 207.8 cm
