History as told by Mr.Barraclough: "In 1934 a friend of mine was poking around No.1 Indian Reserve when he noticed this abandoned old canoe. I went with hime to look at it, and we spoke to an old Indian who lived near by. He stated his father often paddled him over to the Fraser River for Salmon fishing in the canoe. The Indian remarked that he had no use for the canoe and that we could take it." Canoe is estimated to be over 180 years old. Carved from a single Cedar log. The Indians had effective techniques for controlling burning and were able to hollow out large logs with fire, adzes and chisels. The canoe was widened by filling it with water, adding hot rocks until the water almost boiled then carefully driving in spreaders. The holes, which were plugged were for determinng thickness. |
