Commentaires : Early 1930's Fashion Because of the financial crisis which ushered in the depression 1930-40, wardrobes quickly changed from the glamour of the 1920's to emphasize the serviceable and versatile. Not surprisingly, this meant a return to the traditional: "soft rounded shoulders, slender, slightly higher waistlines and unexagerated hiplines over gradually outward flowing skirts" (Collard 3). Dark colours, printed cottons, wool tweeds predominated for daywear; for evening wear, long evening gowns of drapy, fine fabrics suited the 1930's ideal: Slender hips, dresses that skinned the torsos and flared at the hem, close-fitting over hips. While the ideal silhouette demanded figure controlling underwear, an economy of material was also necessary; as a result, layers, pleats, draping disappeared. Mid 1930 Fashion By 1935, a broad shouldered silhouette became popular. Waistlines usually had narrow self-fabric belts but were not accented until the end of the decade. The draped effect, especially on sleeves, and with shoulder capes became popular. By mid decade, the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (ILGWU) managed to organize a large part of the industry in Canada. Late 1930's By the end of the decade, hemlines were nearing the knee. The long slim silhouette was no longer important. Rounder hips became emphasized with tighter fitted waists. Puffed sleeves accented broad shoulders. Shirtwaist dresses, boleros, sweetheart necklines, slightly draped bodices, wide shoulders, yokes, and knifepleats all became characteristic of the end of the decade. And, with the beginning of World War II, fashions remained unchanged until 1946.
