John McAteer, proprietor, previously owned the "Western Hotel" which later became "The Ambassador". His son, John Jr., is listed as a clerk at the hotel. His daughter, Katherine, is listed as a music teacher in the 1921 city directory. A Guelph business publication describes the American hotel in 1908 as "steam heated, gas and electric heat, 45 rooms, parlours, and a bar" (1908 Mercury Business Edition).
