Fonctions : The Ontario Agriculture College was established in 1873 when the Ontario government bought the 550 acre Moreton Lodge Farm from local farmer Frederick Stone. They founded the Guelph School of Agriculture and Experimental Farm. 28 male students were enrolled. After a chaotic year, going through two principals, William Johnston became the principal and brought stability and respectability to the school. He established a curriculum, divided the school into departments and hired lecturers. In 1880 the school became the Ontario Agriculture College and Experimental Farm and launches a 2 year diploma course. In the beginning, OAC was affiliated with the University of Toronto and all degrees and diplomas were issued from there. In 1887 a three year course was offered. In 1893, the school was expanded to include a lab and a residence and 5 women, the first women allowed on campus, attended a short dairy course. In 1901 the agricultural course was extended again to four years. The Macdonald Institute was established in 1903 as a school of domestic science and women were allowed to attend the college. The most popular course was the Home Economics course. In 1918, women were allowed to enter the OAC. These were the first women to be admitted to a regular agriculture course. The first female graduate from the OAC was Susannah Chase, OAC '21. The College Royal was launched in 1925 as a mini winter fair and in 1926 the college's affiliation with U of T allowed for Masters degrees to be available in all OAC departments. The first student newspaper, The Oasis, lasted from 1929 until 1932 when it was shut down for reporting on the rugby team's sex life and criticism of faculty. Johnston Hall was built in 1932 and replaced the original stone farmhouse as the residence and administration of the OAC. Th Ontarian was born in 1951, replacing The Aggie, started in 1946. In 1962, OAC became part of the Federated Colleges of the Ontario Department of Agriculture, along with the Macdonald Institute and the Ontario Veterinary College, all being affiliated with U of T for granting degrees. This set OAC on its way to becoming a university and in 1964 the University of Guelph was established, with the Ontario Agriculture College being a full member. OAC had it's centennial celebrations in 1974. Since then the school has been expanding. Documentation was provided stating Guelph's prime distinction being in agriculture, veterinary and biological sciences. It is the only University in North America to have grown from an Agricultural College. In its beginning, OAC admission requirements were the same as for High School. Room and board were free and a fifty dollar bonus was given to all students who passed their final exams. The students were required to work in the fields and barns for seven hours during the day and attend classes in the evenings. Advances were made by OAC's in many areas of study: They began the first computerization of records, in 1913 they began research on ice cream. A unique contract with the Ministry of Agriculture and food allowed the OAC to carry out most of Ontario's agricultural research and related services.
