Fonctions : This photo was part of a collection of photos that hung in Memorial Gardens Arena. When the arena closed in May of 2001, the photos were donated to the museum. Guelph's first Jr. A club, the Guelph Bitlmores, was formed in 1948 with R. Dawson as president, Roy Mason as manager and Joe Veroni as trainer. the "Mad Hatters" as they were known, enjoyed much success winning the OHA championships in 1949-50, 1951-52, and 1956-57. The 1951-52 squad, coached by Alfie Pike, brough Guelph its first Memorial Cup, emblematic of junior hockey supremacy in Canada. The talented club featured eight players who would go on to play in the NHL. The eight were Andy Bathgate, Harry Howell, Lou Fontinato, Dean Prentice, Aldo Guidolin, Bill McCreary, Ron Murphy, and Ron Stewart. Both Bathgate and Howell have since been inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame. Former NHL'er Eddie "The Enternainer" Shack played for the 1956-57 Biltmores.
