Description : Black and white photo mounted on a cream mat. The photo shows 13 women standing around a cake that they made of the HMCS Guelph. They are standing inside a bakery, Guthrie's Bakery. Most of the women are wearing white baker's dresses but one woman is wearing a different coloured outfit. The cake stands on a pedestal that is draped with an Union Jack. The cake is decorated with lots of flowers, a saying about the sea, and it is topped with a sailboat. The interior edge of the mat has the names of all of the employees listed in pencil: Back Row, Left to RIght: "Jackie Moisan, Jean Lazzari, Eleanor Patton, Mary Hasson Zinger, Olive Guthrie, Ruth Craig Guthrie." Front Row, L to R: "Dena Lazzari, Jean Thompson, Betty Guthrie Gardner, Lois Saison, Joyce Ellen Rabbi, Madge Burford, Jeanne Pybus.
Fonctions : The employees of Guthrie's Bakery made a cake of the H.C.M.S. of Guelph. They were invited to Toronto for the launching of the ship, May 9, 1944. Betty Guthrie decorated the cake. The donor's mother is Jean Lazzari and her sister is Dena Lazzari.The HMCS Guelph was a revised Flower class corvette built by Collingwood shipyards in Collingwood, ON. The ship was laid down on May 29, 1943, launched on December 20, 1943 and commissioned May 9, 1944. After the commision, Guelph arrived in Halifax early in June of that year. Guelph left port in Halifax on July 2 to escort two submarines to Philadelphia. She was then sent to Bermuda for workups and then sent to New York in August. Guelph was a local escort in the New York area until September when she was transatlantic escort based out of St. John's. On her final transatlantic trip she left Belfast on April 9, 1945 to be based at Halifax until paid off on June 27 at Srel. On October 2 she was sold to a New York buyer retaining her name under a panamanian flag.Guthrie's Bakery, advertised as a "Quality Bakery" where one could purchase "High-Class Cakes and Pastry," was owned by Frank Guthrie and its main location was 61 Quebec Street. It also had a Market Bakery on 50 Carden Street, as well as "Downy-flake Doughnut Shop" at 63 Quebec St.
