Description : A large brown book with maroon spine and tips with a blue label in the centre with black printing. Title reads; "Insurance Plan/of/ Guelph./Ontario./Published by/Chas. E. Goad. Civil Engineer,/Montreal" Stamped at the top and bottom of the label is "F. Grundy". It is also stamped 3 times on the inside cover. There are three pieces of paper here: the first is part of the book, "This plan has been revised to" written in pencil "June 1888 & Nov 1892". "Free of expense to the Company owning it, and is returned to the local agent," the name has been erased and a dark smudge left so the name cannot be made out....The next piece of paper is white and has been taped inside just below. It is hard to make out but it says, "Fisher's Royal Hotel...Guelph, Man.it(?) 1964/Received from Ted Wells/the sum of Loan 1906 Dollars/Remarks Atlas of Guelph./ Fisher's Royal Hotel/ Per...Fisher" The 3rd piece of paper is pink and also taped just below appears to be a cheque paying to the order of Ted Wells of $75 on Dec 4th 1965. The bank The Waterloo Trust and Savings Company has been scratched out and (?) Can Chip/Bank of Commerce" is written. It is signed by Tom(?) Fisher and says, "RT (?)#7 Guelph/Wellington Atlas". The word "Paid" is stamped upside down on it. The pages are thick and all have corrections or revisions made by adding another piece on top. There is a legend on the first page but does not explain what the orange sticker dots that have been added, mean. Identify significant aspects on the page? The pages use the colours; black, yellow, red, and blue.
Commentaires : The 3-storey Royal Hotel at 106 Carden Street (middle to right of photograph) covers the site of several of Guelph's earliest hotels. The present building has been in continuous service as a hotel since 1856 and is the city's oldest continuously operating business place. In 1828, Thomas and Patrick Keating built their British Coffee House slightly to the east, while, to the west in 1830 Robert Elder and John Linderman operated a hotel known as the Suffolk House. In 1856, the earliest portions of the present building were constructed. They probably incorporated some of the stone walls of the British Hotel (1845). In 1862, the building was doubled in size with an extension east from the present lobby. Since about 1868-1870, the name has been the "Royal Hotel". For over 40 years, until the late 1960's, the hotel was operated by the Fisher family. 2.George Sleeman (b. 1841 d. 1926) took over the Silver Creek Brewing Company, established by his father, John, in 1861. 3. Adam Robertson Sr. came from Paris, Ontario in 1847. Soon after his arrival, he built a moulding and machine shop at the corner of Norfolk and Cambridge Sts. Between 1848-1852, Adam Robertson, Adam Robertson jr., and John Watt owned Guelph Foundries (Robertson and Watt). This partnership was dissolved in 1852, but carried on by John Watt. In 1852, Guelph Foundry II (Robertson's Foundry) was established at Eramosa Rd. at Mitchell St. where boilers, machines and general machinery were made. In 1873, they are listed as employing 12 hands. Adam Robertson Jr. carried on the company alone for several years. In 1862-63, during the American Civil War, Robertson was convinced by his relative to cast cannons, cannonballs and hand grenades which his relative then attempted to smuggle into the States to aid the South. 4.Mail facilities were first set up in Guelph in the south wing of Guelph's first building, "The Priory" (see 988.28.1), July 6, 1828. John Reid was the first Guelph postmaster. F.B. Husband succeeded Reid in 1829 and ran the Post Office until 1834 when his sister, Mrs. Hume, took the position. In 1829, the Post Office moved to a site on Macdonell Street, where the Legion was later located. In 1835, the Post Office moved to the top of Wilson Street when that street was widened. At the same time, Mrs. Hume married Robert Corbett and the Post Office moved to his premises on Cork Street. Mr. Corbett became postmaster in 1847 and held the position until his death in 1861. In 1850, the Post Office moved to where the Canada Trust building is located. Colonel William Kingsmill succeeded Corbett as postmaster, but Arthur Wells, a civil engineer, was acting postmaster. During that time, the Post Office was located on the east side of St. George's Square. When Kingsmill died in 1876, David Stirton became postmaster and the offices moved to the Hazelton Block on the west side of Upper Wyndham Street while the new building in the Square was being built at the present location of the Bank of Nova Scotia. 5.Built in 1841-1843 as the District of Wellington Court House, this structure is the oldest remaining public building built of stone in Guelph or Wellington County and is one of the oldest stone buildings between Toronto and London. 6. It originally was located in St. George's Square in 1833-34. A new stone church was partially completed in 1850. 13.In 1876-77, a locally-incorporated stock company built the "new" Wellington Hotel on this site. It succeeded the "old" Wellington which had been located at the southern end of the block from 1846-1876. 14.Central School opened January 16, 1877. The limestone building was torn down in 1968 and new school built in 1969. 15.Knox Presbyterian Church had its beginnings in 1844 when a group of members left St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. They met at a local inn until they were able to erect a small stone chapel on Yarmouth Street in 1847. That property was sold in the late 1860's to the Raymond Sewing Machine Co., and a large building, seating 1,000 persons, was built at the present location. 16.Located at 50 Quebec Street. Officially opened Dec. 17, 1871. Built by dissenting Presbyterians who opposed the idea that the church should be associated. Broke off from Knox Church congregation. 17.In 1855 Thomas McCrae (1800-1878) went into partnership with John Thompson and purchased timber and sawmills in E. Flamboro, and continued in this line some years, until the pine timber in the neighborhood had been exhausted. He later went into the woolen business under the firm name of Armstrong, McCrae and Co., operating the worsted and knitting mills, later known as the Guelph Woollen Mills Co. 18.The Victoria Hotel was located at 67-71 Wyndham St., currently known as the Victoria Building. It was built about 1859-1860 as a 2-storey hostelry; the building was enlarged in 1862 and given a third floor about the mid-1870's. 19.St. George's Square, at the mid-point in the length of Wyndham St., is an impressive open space providing a focus for the entire Central Business District of Guelph. However, with rapid development of business along Upper Wyndham St. during the 1870's, care was given to create a park of quality at the strategic axis where Eramosa Rd. and Cardigan, Woolwich and Wyndham Streets intersect at unusual angles. An ornate wooden bandstand sat at the north-west angle of the Square until 1927. 26.Built originally as the Zion Chapel in 1856-1857out of local limestone.
