FERROUS SHEET METAL BACKING WITH TIN PLATING, CELLULOSE NITRATE OR ACETATE VARNISH (FLAMMABLE)
Numéro d'accession : 2003.526.002
Secteur géo-culturel : Germany
Description : A sepia toned studio photograph of (possibly) Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Simpson of Germany, the great-grandparents of the donor, fashioned into a circular photo button (see History notes). The photo button has a matte finish (probably cellulose nitrate or acetate, both of which are flammable under certain conditions). The button is a slightly convex disc, backed with dull gray sheet metal with remnants of tin plating. It is a laminate of varnished paper and metal. According to the donor, the original photograph from which this button was made was taken in Germany, circa 1910, or earlier. The photo button itself may have been made there or in Canada. The straight edges of the original photograph run from side to side of the button, with cream coloured blank strips above and below it, to the outer edges of the circle.
Dia.: 15.2 cm
ORIGINAL
Fonctions : Large photo buttons like this were a photography fad or novelty of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A sepia (usually) print in wet condition was placed over a convex metal backing, then laminated with (likely) a cellulose nitrate or acetate varnish, and clamped to another backing of sheet metal. An older photograph could have been re-photographed to produce the button, as this one likely was. Some street photographers could make candid photo buttons more or less right on the spot. Some back plates have devices for hanging. This one doesn't have such a hanger, and was probably displayed flat or on a stand. Although not as common as tintypes, photo buttons can still be found at flea markets and the like. (Information from Brian Sinclair, Brian's Foto Source, Cambridge, 11/2003.)
