Description : | A woman's black silk taffeta bodice with cream-coloured satin, lace-covered front sections and collar. The centre front sections are gathered at the neckline and waistline to produce a pouched effect. The satin is covered with a machine-made ivory and brown, floral-embroidered lace. The stand collar is the same, with the addition of two points of pink velvet along the top edge, trimmed with ivory and gold-thread braid. The inside upper edge of the collar is also trimmed with pleated organza. The front sections fasten with hook and eyelets at centre front. The centre front edge of the right half is trimmed with gold-thread and gold beaded ribbon. The inner bodice is separate from the outer bodice through the centre front sections; they fasten at centre front with hooks and eyes and there are frills stitched below centre to fill in the fronts. Strips of black and ivory tap lace are attached over the shoulders at the outside edge of the front sections, forming a neckline trim. The side fronts, through the bust area, are pintucked and have a turnback tab holding the lace in place. The pintucked section is continued across the back and is trimmed with black floral lace cutouts. The hemline comes to a point at centre front. The waistline is trimmed with three rows of black velvet ribbon with loops at the right centre front edge and bows at centre back. There are two-piece leg-o-mutton sleeves (upper and lower sections are also pieced, likely to gain width in the fabric). More than half of the sleeve is a long full puff; the lower part is a tight-fiting cylinder. The bottom part of the lower half of the sleeve is pintucked and trimmed with the black floral lace. The bodice is lined with black polished cotton and has nine bones and an inside belt. There are two eyes on the belt, to attach the bodice to a skirt. The bodice is machine sewn with some hand finishing. Ca. 1892-1894. Length: 51.5 cm ORIGINAL |
