Fonctions : | Similar pillow shams dated c. 1890 are shown on page 57 of McKendry's Quilts. "These or similar designs were available in cotton or linen from mail order catalogues." "Early pillow shams were frilled and embroidered in white floral designs. Later shams had red patterns; ones with little messages were very popular: Sweet Lilies Close Their Leaves at Night, And Open with the Morning Light. and, I slept and Dreamed that Life was Beauty, I Woke and Found that Life was Duty. One line of the verse was embroidered on each pillow sham. Another popular theme was "Good Night, Good Morning" well embellished with flowers, lilies, birds, deer, herons and swans.... Some families used embroidered bedspreads to match the shams in the summer, and in some houses these cotton spreads were placed under the best quilt to provide a fancy bed cover when the quilt was removed at night." - page 56 |
