Description : Biltmore' straw boater with wide blue/black/grey striped grosgrain ribbon band. Straw is coarsely woven of outward-radiating bands of diagonally plaited straw. Leather sweat band with size label: 7-1/4. Inside of crown is lined with a stiffened cotton or silk fabric and maker's insignia etc. is printed onto this. Lettering reads: BILTMORE/PERSONALITY HATS/BILT BY/BILTMORE/DURABLE QUALITY/MADE IN CANADA. This lining piece is sewn to crown side lining of (probably) cotton netting.
Hat size: 7-l/4, Height: 10.5 cm, Length (front to back): 34 cm, Width (side to side): 30 cm, Circum. of inside band: 57 cm, Outside brim circum.: 101 cm

Fonctions : From reference (see below): 'A boater or hard hat (is) a man's sennit straw sailor coated with shellac from India, popular in the late nineteenth century. The English wore it punting, hence the name. In America it was worn almost universally from June first to September first. The name sennit' comes from the nautical term "seven-knit,' a method of braiding rope.' The Biltmore Hat Company was so named in 1919. Hat production began in Guelph in 1918. Biltmore Straw Hats subsidiary formed 1925.
