Description : Compound microscope made by W. Watson & Sons Ltd. Also wooden case, two eyepieces, one eyepiece case, and one brass tube which inserts into the top of the optical tube. Adjustable platform or cross-table, movable in two directions at right angles to each other. Beneath the cross-table is a higher-quality condenser (Abbe?), with filter holder and iris. The microscope inclines from the apex of the tripod stand. Engraved above back leg: W. WATSON & SONS LTD./313 HIGH HOLBORN/LONDON. Also engraved on the back leg: No. 17577. A letter (1971) from the manufacturer to the donor accompanying the donation reads (in part): ...if the instrument is engraved W. Watson & Sons then it is probably previous to 1908, but if the engraving is W. Watson & Sons Limited then it is likely to have been manufactured from 1908 onwards. The optical tube is steel, but it appears that all other metal parts are brass. Body parts are lacquered black. Knobs, table, condenser etc. are unpainted. One objective is newer. Other two are probably original to the instrument. One is an oil immersion objective. One eyepiece (x3) appears original, the other (x10) is newer. The case is oak, with a metal carry grip on top. Key plate on door is missing. The microscope was wrapped in a newer plastic microscope cover when received.
Height: (case): 33 cm, Width: (case): 20.9 cm, Depth: (case): 23.5 cm, Height: (microscope, tube fully extended): 36 cm, Height: (tube retracted): 31 cm, Width: (stand, front legs): 17 cm, Depth: (stand, front legs to centre back leg): 18.5 cm

Commentaires : Microscope probably belonged to the donor or to someone in the Department of Biology at Laurentian University, Sudbury, of which he was Chairman in 1971 (date of the above mentioned letter).
