Fonctions : | Donated by long time volunteer and Mississauga resident, John Hammil. Many of the artifacts donated belonged to either his family or that of his first wife Gertrude. Quinine is a crystalline alkaloid that has anti-malarial, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties. It was extracted from the bark of the Cinchona tree found in South America. Quinine's main use has been to treat Malaria with the first recorded treatments done in Rome in 1631. The Quechua Indians of Peru also used it to store shivering from cold temperatures. Quinine is still used in the medical field today. It has some other uses including being a flavour additive to tonic water, and an ingredient in an aperitif known as Quinquina in France.
