Description : Bible with black leather binding with border and central medallion with the words _British and Foreign Bible Society_ imprinted in the centre of the front cover. _Holy Bible_ in raised lettering on the book's back. Written in ink on the first page _Jane Amy Lucas her book, price 0.14..0. Bought November 1,1842_ On the inside of front cover is pasted a newspaper obituary of Mrs. David Snider. The title given on the title page is: The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments: Translated out of the original tongues; and with the Former Translations Diligently compared and revised, by His Majesty's Special Command. Cambridge: Printed by John W. Parker, University Printer, For the British and Foreign Bible Society, MDCCCXXXVIII_ (1837). The bible contains many family mementoes.
Fonctions : The first Bible Society was established in 1804. The main aim of the organization was to propagate the Christian Bible. These Bible Societies expanded rapidly at the end of the 18th century as a result of the establishment of various Missionary Societies. The most important of the Bible Societies was the British and Foreign Bible Society that produced biblical texts in 700 languages and dialects. This organization also managed to distribute over 550 million copies of the Bible to people all over the world. The United Bible Societies was established in 1946 to improve cooperation between the various societies. It now has a worldwide fellowship of over 130 Bible Societies.
