Description : One of a pair of hand-stitched half/over sleeves of white, woven percale-like fabric. The cuff is 16.5 x 2.3 with 8 cut-work 'daisies' and one (.9 cm d.) mother-of-pearl flat, four-hole button. The sleeve is gathered onto the cuff. The sleeve is 3 large circular motifs of leaf/oval shaped cut-work, above a curvy line of 15 (plus 2 halves) cut-work 'daisies' above a line of 46 cut-work leaves. The top of the sleeve is formed into a narrow casing through which a length (56.5 cm) of twill tape is threaded, for gathering and tying the top of the sleeve closed. The side hems are turned in twice and overstitched in place. In the upper proper right corner a _G_ is embroidered with red thread in a running stitch.
Fonctions : Victorian women could emphasize modesty in their dress by wearing freshly laundered detachable white collars and false undersleeves called engageantes. Both were often made of delicate white work and gave an air of refinement and daintiness. To balance the effect of the cage crinoline, sleeves were like large bells too and sometimes had open splits allowing for lavish decorative sleeve hemlines and detachable false undersleeves (engageantes). Engageantes were often made from fine lace, linen, lawn, cambric or Broderie Anglaise and were easy to remove, launder and re-stitch into position.
