| Fonctions : | The City of Mississauga hosts Canada Day celebrations at the City Centre, recently renovated and renamed Mississauga Celebration Square. Celebrations include: welcoming new citizens to Canada, live entertainment, and fireworks. There are also celebrations throughout the city at various Memorial Parks. The City has hosted Canada Day festivities since the opening of the Civic Centre in 1987. Prior to that the city incorporated Canada Day festivities in its annual "City Festival" or "Rainbow Festival". Canada Day was initially known as Dominion Day and it was recognized as a statutory holiday in 1879. Local municipalities rarely celebrated this holiday on a public affair except for recognizing the 50th and 100th Anniversaries of Canada. It was only after 1958 that the Canadian government started organizing celebrations annually and it took a while for it to spread outside of Ottawa. In 1982 Dominion Day was changed to Canada Day. |
