Fonctions :

Accessioned 5 May 1967. This 19th century chair was made in Canada or the United States. Later variations of the Windsor style became popular in all parts of Upper Canada throughout the 19th century. The Windsor was developed to a high degree of functional beauty in eighteenth century America. Some of the examples were brought to Upper Canada by Loyalists. Early in the 19th century, a wide variety of later Windsor styles began to appear in the US, which incorporated the formal Neoclassical styles. These styles were quite easy to make and an incredible number of side chairs, rockers, armchairs, and benches were made in early American factories. Many of these productions were available on the Canadian market, but soon local manufacturers were creating their own sturdy, painted and stenciled examples. One of the earliest known Windsor makers was Chester Hatch of Kingston, who began his craft in 1815. In all parts of the province, chairs and benches in this style were more popular than any other style and account for a large majority of the early seating found today. Some characteristics of British Country Windsor style chairs are simple leg design, legs fitted through the seat, and hardwood plank seat.
