Read_; written by Fitch W. Taylor; contains volumes one and two although only twenty pages of volume two remain intact. Includes some engravings and one colour plate of people and places mentioned within content; missing cover. Inscription on front reads _Gaylord Greeniaus's Book, Toronto May 5th 1849_. Many of the pages at the beginning of the book have brown foxing marks although pages near end are still white with fewer stains. The book was published by D. Appleton & Co., 200 Broadway, New York, USA.; Livre intitulé «A Voyage Around the World, and Visits to Various Foreign Countries, United States Frigate Columbia; Attended by her Consort The sloop of War John Adams, and Commanded by Commodore George C. Read», (Un voyage autour du monde et des visites dans plusieurs pays étrangers, frégate américaine Columbia accompagnée de la corvette John Adams, commandée par le capitaine George C. Read» écrit par Fitch W. Taylor. Il comporte le premier et deuxième tome, bien que ce dernier ne compte plus que vingt pages restées intactes. Le livre contient quelques gravures et une plaque en couleur de personnes et endroits mentionnés dans le texte; la couverture est manquante. L'inscription sur la couverture du livre indique en anglais : «Livre appartenant à Gaylord Greeniaus, Toronto le 5 mai 1849.» Plusieurs pages au début du livre sont mouchetées de taches roussâtres; cependant les pages près de la fin du livre sont encore blanches et moins tachées. |
| Fonctions : | Gaylord Greeniaus (1827-1893) was the son of Elizabeth Ann Greeniaus née Oliphant (1803-1866) and Peter (1797-1871) and grandson to Sebastian (1761-1847) and Eve (1766-1844) Greeniaus who were early settlers in Toronto Township. Sebastian was a United Empire Loyalist who emigrated from the United States to Toronto Township around 1806. He fulfilled his settlement duties on June 27, 1808 which allowed him to get a second land grant of 200 acres on July 1, 1808. Gaylord was born and lived all his life on the farm his grandfather established located on the 2nd Concession, south side, Dundas Street, in Toronto Township (area later known as Sheridan before becoming part of Clarkson). Gaylord was a farmer and was a notable exhibitor at all principal Ontario fairs winning many medals for his cereals, fruit, and apiary products. He was a staunch Conservative and a member of the Methodist Church in Clarkson which later became the Carman Methodist Episcopal Church (now Christ Church). As a neighbour he was described as _eminently sociable and always ready to lend a helping hand in time of need_. He was married to Selina Merigold (d- 1855) and Catherine Kennedy (1832-1920). Gaylord had five children, Norman, Sophora, Charles, William, and Arletta. Gaylord Greeniaus is buried in Spring Creek Cemetery in Clarkson. Book donated by Wilmer Greeniaus, the great-great grandson of Sebastian Greeniaus. Wilmer grew up on the land originally settled by Sebastian and later generations of his family. Wilmer's father, Norman, sold the land to the United Lands Corporation for the development of the Park Royal Subdivision that opened in 1958.; Gaylord Greeniaus (1827 " 1893) est le fils d'Elizabeth Ann Greeniaus née Oliphant (1803 " 1866) et de Peter (1797 " 1871) et le petit-fils de Sebastien (1761- 1847) et Eve (1766 " 1844) Greeniaus qui étaient parmi les premiers émigrants au canton de Toronto. Sebastien était un loyaliste qui, vers 1806, a émigré au canton de Toronto des États-Unis. Grâce à l'achèvement des obligations d'installation le 27 juin 1808, il a reçu une deuxième concession de 200 acres de terrain le 1er juillet 1808. Gaylord naquit et vécut toute sa vie sur la ferme que son grand-père située rue Dundas sur la 2e concession sud au canton de Toronto (région connue plus tard comme «Sheridan» avant de faire partie de «Clarkson»). Gaylord était fermier et exposant éminent dans toutes les foires principales en Ontario. Il a gagné plusieurs médailles pour ses céréales, ses fruits et ses produits apicoles. Il était ardent partisan des conservateurs et membre de l'église méthodiste de Clarkson qui, plus tard, est devenue l'église méthodiste épiscopale de Carman (maintenant l'église chrétienne+). On le décrivait comme voisin «très sociable et toujours prêt à venir en aide aux moments difficiles». Il a épousé Selina Merigold (décédée en 1855) et ensuite Catherine Kennedy (1832 " 1920). Gaylord avait cinq enfants : Norman, Sophora, Charles, William et Arletta. Gaylord Greeniaus est enterré dans le cimetière «Spring Creek» à Clarkson.
