| Description : | Pair of reindeer skin boot with beaded band. Seams and beading worked with synthetic sinew (unwaxed dental floss). Grass insoles (sample in small bag inserted in stuffing of boot). Oogruk (bearded seal) soles with narrow strip of dehaired sealskin folded in half and inserted in seam. Hand tanned reindeer skin shafts decorated with Czech glass beads 6cm below topline. Main section of shaft (below beadwork) is composed of 5 pieces of skin. The centre front band extends over the top of the foot, 2 identical side panels (1 each side of shaft) and back piece extending to sole seam. A 4cm wide band of skin wraps around the sides of the foot ending on either side of the back panel. This band has a centre seam. The 5cm wide beaded band is worked on a separate piece of skin and sewn to the boot shaft. Top and bottom rows are composed of alternating groups of three worked in white and green. Next row in: white beads. Next two rows in: brown/red beads. A geometric pattern is the central design element: worked in red, yellow and green. Four tiny shield-shaped elements are beaded on separate pieces of skin sewn into corresponding cutouts of leg sections. The boot shaft continues above the beadwork with 4 pieces of reindeer skin matching up with the main leg section. A 1.55cm band of alder bark dyed skin is sewn to the topline. A narrow skin thong is sewn to the inside leg to tie boots together. Ankle ties pigmented with alder bark and sewn into base of back side panel. Note: some of the leg sections have been pieced together, including the topline. |
