Description : | The Bluebird is an excellent example of a grand war canoe. Carved from a single Western Red Cedar log by Coast Salish Master Carver Simon Charlie, it flew along courses up to 16 kilometers long. Paddled by 10 men and a steersman, this craft is an excellent example of a grand war canoe. Purchased by Kirk Wipper, founder of the Canadian Canoe Museum in the 1970's, "The Bluebird" retained its winning status throughout its career. |
Fonctions : | Coast Salish Master Carver, aboriginal elder Simon Charlie of Cowichan Bay, British Columbia, was born on November 14, 1919. In his over thirty years of carving he has carved canoes, totems, ceremonial masks, rattles, paddles and talking sticks. One of his grand totem carvings a Cowichan Indian welcoming figure stands outside of the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria, British Columbia another of his totem poles stands at the Canadian Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. In 2001 Simon Charlie was hounoured with the Order of British Columbia. The "Bluebird", carved by Simon Charlie, is the longest craft in the Canadian Canoe Museum's collection. |
