| Description : | High four poster bed with tester. Headboard posts are octagonal and tapered at the top and turned in a ring pattern near the ball feet. Posts at the foot are more elaborately turned, combination of rung and vase motif. Baluster shaped upper portion. Ball feet. Headboard is plain rectangular pine. Footboard is double curved at the top. Open at the bottom. Both head and footboard are probably later additions. Both are mortised into the plain squared end rolls. Plain squared side rails with notches to hold slats. Plain plank tester rails. Maple light reddish stain. |
| Commentaires : | This piece is original to the Doak Historic Site. Doak house is a rare achievement in New Brunswick's heritage preservation as several of the pieces of furniture in the collection are original and therefore this piece could have been built by a member of the town or possibly even by Doak himself. Even the maple and pine woods used in the creation of this piece, being both readily available in New Brunswick suggest that it may have been crafted by a local craftsman. As stated in the book New Brunswick: Its History and Its People by William Spray, the four-post bed was perhaps the most popular design of the late 18th century however the book English-Canadian Furniture of the Georgian Period suggests that high four-post beds were very uncommon of Canadian origin as compared to low-post beds. Beds such as this piece with its plain-turned posts are much more common than those with reeded or rope-carved posts. This type of bed remained popular well into the 19th century until it was eventually "rendered obsolete by reasonably efficient domestic heating stoves, and finally by central heating". |
