Commentaires : This cradle belonged to descendants of the James Ketchum family of Woodstock, New Brunswick. James Ketchum was a farmer and Loyalist from Norwalk, Connecticut. In 1783 he left Connecticut with his wife Sarah Burr and his three children (Richard, Ralph, and Elizabeth) and sailed on the "Spring Fleet" to Saint John. At first he settled at Kingston, Kings County, New Brunswick after receiving a 200 acre grant of land. In 1789 the Ketchums moved to Woodstock. James Ketchum died in 1791, and his wife Sarah died the following year. James' first born son Richard (b. 1773) was a member of the House of Assembly for York County from June 1827 until October 1830. In the election of June 1827, Richard Ketchum was narrowly defeated by rival candidate Jedediah Slason, Esq. Mr. Ketchum protested the return, and was awarded the seat. In the election of October 1830 Mr. Slason got his revenge, defeating Mr. Ketchum and taking the York County seat. The Kethcums and the other Loyalists of the "Spring Fleet" owed their escape from Connecticut primarily to the British armed forces. The British fortified Lloyd's Neck with a garrison, which lay between the churches of Norwalk and Stamford. The Ketchums and the other inhabitants of the area were all wealthy farmers, Churchmen and Quakers, and Loyalists. The presence of the British garrison allowed for safe asylum and safe passage for the Loyalists from Connecticut. The Connecticut Loyalists left in April 1783 on the Union, headed by Captain Wilson. After settling at Kingston (at the head of Bellisle Creek) the Loyalists established a community and by Easter 1784 had established a church. James Ketchum was elected as one of twelve vestrymen for the church.
