| Description : | Chinese Royal or Merchant Doll (also called Chinese Opera Dolls as they were often given as souvineers from the Peking opera. All parts of the opera were played by men, this doll may be a woman character (?) The clothing is representive of the Ming Dynasty (AD 1368-1644). The Head is made of composition a clay painted, the fingers are made of rolled newspaper painted. This doll has a hoop around waist, which resembles a chasity belt. the long fingers represent the long fingernails of the royality. This doll wears an orange shirt and pants decorated with embroidered flowers of both the front and back and hems. the Shirt is split on the sides to the waist and has a off center colsure. the doll has a clay face which is painted white and has a headdress which is gold and black on the head.
