Commentaires : Acc.No. 2018.17.04 LEGENDS OF THE HALL: Colleen Jones Interview Notes 00:00 Intro Sequence, Hello, etc. Host Bruce Rainnie introduces guest Colleen Jones. 01:00 CJ discusses how she transitions from funny and approachable in life to intensely focused on the ice. She is known to have Maurice Richard eyes, which she takes as a compliment. When CJ is too happy, her team is worried. Focus and flow get harder when the team thinks too much. 02:45 CJ comes from a big family of 7 sisters and 1 brother. Neighbours (Fitzners) were curlers and got eldest sister Barb into curling at the Mayflower curling club, whose age minimum for attendance was 14. As the sisters turned 14, they each got to start curling as a rite of passage. CJs older sisters (Barb, Maureen, and Shiela) warned her not to embarrass them, so CJ practiced in socks on the kitchen floor to be prepared. She appreciated the pressure to keep up with her older sisters. 04:15 Curling is a cheap sport for a big family without expensive gear. CJ bought a Little Beaver corn broom using babysitting money and wrapped electrical tape around her sneaker instead of using a slider. Dealing with lower quality gear made CJ more competitive and gave her strong leg drive. 05:30 CJ always had to be the winner, more competitive than other sisters middle child means having to make more of an impact to get attention. 06:15 CJs parents are not competitive. They were products of the Great Depression and WWII and their main focus was getting by rather than recreation. 07:15 Innuendo of parents expectation that eventually they would quit curling and get on with life. 07:50 CJ switched to the Skip position after losing the Canadian Junior Championships. She decided she would never miss an easy shot again. 08:30 Every shot is pressure packed curling is a team sport, and mistakes are made by the entire team, not just the skip. 09:35 Greatest Curler is too subjective a term to define CJ. She names Jennifer Jones, Rachael Holman, Schmirler as great Canadian curlers, and with a worldwide focus names Annette Norberg and Elisabeth Gustavsson as amazing Swedish curlers. 10:45 CJ became the youngest Skip to win the Scotties Tournament in 1982. They were considered brash at the time. 14:00 They might be torture, the games you lose, but they teach you an awful lot if you allow them to. 14:40 CJ foresaw another Scotties win after a lull in performance, always thinking about potential wins. After 1984 she got married, had a child and was not entirely focused on training full-time. Began to build a team with Kim Kelly, Nancy Delahunt and Marianne Arsenault that she describes as magic. 17:15 High performance play inspired her team to be great. 19:00 Her teams commitment to the same goal made it special. The taste of winning was addictive. 20:20 Realizing their mental focus was off, they brought on Ken Bagnell as a coach and sports psychologist. The team became mentally tough. 21:00 CJ prepares for matches with Bruce Springsteen (Born to Run and Thunder Road) 21:15 People complained about CJ chewing gum but never to her face. She finds it a powerful tool for focus. 21:48 Playing seniors over 50 crowd, enjoyable to see former competitors. Appreciates curling as a lifetime sport like golf or tennis. 22:45 CJ one of the first in curling to use a personal trainer for fitness in 1999, which was never commonplace like it is now. She continues to do physical training to stay in shape. 24:10 Curling shaped all of CJs life taught her to set goals, shaped family life, influenced her children to continue to have dreams as they age, made friends. 25:25 Thank you, goodbye, etc., credits roll.
