Tended to be a benchwarmer. Baseball was first love but played many sports and games.03:20 Would shovel the snow around the basketball net in order to be able to play in the winter Forest Hills, New York.04:00 Was offered a half scholarship for baseball in Florida, but did not end up playing there because the university would not let him play basketball as well.05:00 All MF knew about Nova Scotia before moving there was that the Sisters of Charity, nuns from Mount Saint Vincent University who taught him in New York, were also from there.05:30 Was not scared to leave home at 18, willing to travel and just happy to have made it onto a team. Culture shock at the old Saint Marys gym because he had played in better in high school. Had a tough first year but learned to love it after acclimating.06:45 First year team was not great. During the last game of the year, SMU beat Acadia with nothing to lose. 07:40 SMU/Acadia basketball rivalry          07:53 There was some unbelievable games between the two universities. Some great great memories packed houses everywhere. Acadia was a great place to play.09:30 No one expected SMU basketball to win a national championship. Greatest moment of MFs life was winning SMU basketball its first national title ever. Played in Ontario, and noticed for first time the rift between Upper Canada and the Maritimes.           10:40 It was everybody against the poor Maritimers. And because we had a few Americans on the team as well, they didnt like that either.11:35 Father Hennessy, Athletic Moderator at SMU, was so proud of the team for winning the title, that he was in tears. MFs mother and father drove through a snowstorm to reach the championship to watch the final two games. MF had no idea that they came until after the games were over. It was the first time they had really seen him play two games in a row.12:30 As a child, MF had always pretended to be scoring the critical goal of a game (e.g. NBA final at Madison Square Garden in the last 2 seconds of play) and that prepared himself to be good at coming through in the clutch.13:05 I think its a mindset. You gotta believe in yourself.13:30 I was so nervous before games. I was shaking. I had no energy because of all of the nervous energy. I really got weak and as the game went on I got stronger and stronger.13:55 Its the same shot if theres 5,000 or nobody in the gym.14:40 Stayed at SMU to finish degrees, and because he loved it there. I wasnt smart enough to get a Masters degree. But stayed around to play Senior basketball until he had to leave the country. Returned when the AUS introduced 5th year eligibility at age 24, after being drafted and attending 2 NBA camps and playing several weeks of basketball in Europe.15:55 Understood the weaknesses that got him cut from the NBA. Believes he would have been better prepared if he had played university basketball in the USA, as NBA camps were cutthroat and USA college basketball is more competitive.17:15 MF felt like a man amongst boys when he returned to play 5th year basketball for SMU.18:25 Play by Play of championship highlights MF said he had a good foul shot due to focused. Felt as if he had an advantage in his 5th year due to experience in NBA camps and Europe.22:00 Meant a lot to win the title again. Came back to SMU to finish his teaching degree, but Really came back to play more basketball.22:30 Fell in love with the Maritimes. When he first arrived, basketball wasnt big, but he watched it grow. Met wife and friends here. Took 8 years to immigrate but is now a proud Canadian; proud Maritimer.23:25 Loved teaching elementary school for 30 years. 24:00 Preferences about players in the NBA today25:00 Thank you, Goodbye, etc., End Credits Roll.
