Description : | The air canister itself is made of aluminium, and has a yellow plastic cap on the top of it. A red label has been placed on the front of the canister with the air canister's usage instructions and model information. A canvas carrying case has been affixed around the canister, with a canvas belt, so the canister can be worn around the user's waist. The gas mask is made from rubber, with glass eyeholes, surrounded by metal. A rubber hose extends from the mask and can be attached to the air canister, so that the wearer can breathe in lower oxygen conditions. |
Commentaires : | This gas mask and air canister was donated by the Provincial Department of Mines and Energy as an example of the system that would have been available in the Bell Island Mines. This system would have been used so a rescuer could breathe fresh air in an emergency situation where methane or other poisonous gas was present in the mine. |
