Commentaires : Relief-moulded jugs had been produced during the late 18th and early 19th C., but in a very different style from those made later in the 19th C. - often the decoration was applied in a contrasting colour onto a stoneware body to resemble Wedgwood's jasperware. The explosion of relief-moulded jugs onto the scene during the early Victorian period came about largely as a result of the Registration Act of 1842, which allowed makers to register their designs, thereby preventing other manufacturers from copying them for a period of three years. Most of the jugs are slip cast in stoneware in various colours including buff, dark green, pale green, white and grey. Designs were mass-produced, often in graduated sizes and sometimes in sets of three. As the century progressed, more attention was paid to using the design to complement the form. Relief-moulded jugs continued to be made until the end of the century. Many of the early Victorian jugs, from the 1840's, were Gothic in form or decoration. Biblical episodes were popular. Other popular subjects were those inspired by novels of the day, especially those of Sir Walter Scott. Classical subjects were in steady demand. Lids were made as an optional extra, so many jugs with no cover may nevertheless have two holes into which mounts for a lid could be fixed if required - as does the jug.
