| Description : | A wooden _nut_ bowl. The bowl is a cross section of tree trunk, 7 cm in height with the rather coarse bark still intact fashioned on a lathe into a nut bowl with a 5.5 cm x 17 cm deep cavity. In the middle of the cavity, a 3 cm high x 3 cm diameter spool has been glued in place with 2 larger (1 cm) holes drilled for a nutcracker and 6 smaller holes (0.4 cm) for nut picks. On the central part of the bottom exterior, there is a 13 cm diameter raised portion (raised by 0.5 cm) that has been cover by a dark brown felt to prevent scratching on a tabletop. The surface has been finished with a clear lacquer showing the colour and grain of the wood on the bottom and the interior. The exterior vertical sides still retain the deep brown, almost black, heavily fissured bark (with a gloss because of the lacquer). Because of the uneven diameter of the exterior, the wall thickness of the bowl varies around the circumference and provides an interesting randomness to the appearance. |
| Fonctions : | The bowl originally belonged to Lucy Springer. Lucy Davis Springer (1885-1938) was the youngest of 14 children born to David Springer and Elizabeth Ghent, who lived on Highway 5 (Dundas Street). Lucy married George Ireland (1885-1972) in 1917. They had one daughter, Lucie Marie, in 1923. Lucy was an accomplished pianist, having earned her A.T.C.M. She taught piano and was always on call to accompany the local vocalists. She played the organ at St. John's Anglican Church on Highway 5. Lucy passed away in 1938 of an unknown illness. |
