Description : | A small Victorian accordion with fruitwood inlay, a rosewood case, and brass and mother-of- pearl keys. The pleated bellows are hand painted silver with blue, red and green painted marks. The keyboard case is dark wood with light wooden inlays in a scroll pattern. The keyboard consists of mother-of-pearl keys and wooden parts. Two of the keys are missing the mother-of-pearl top; one key is partially broken. The bass case is a lighter wood with brass and metal keys. The main key has a brass button handle and a large gold medallion that lifts off the wood when the brass button is pressed. There are also two buttons on the side of the case, which when pressed, enable the accordion to make a greater sound. |
Fonctions : | It is possible the accordion belonged to Elizabeth "Libby" Ireland (Maria Elizabeth, 2nd child born to John and Eliza Ireland, 1870-1931). There is an accordion music booklet (988.1.29) with _Elizabeth Ireland_ written across the top in black ink. Built 1835-37, Ireland House was the home of Joseph Ireland, one of Burlington's earliest settlers. He emigrated from Bowes, Yorkshire, England in 1819 and petitioned for land at Oakridge Farm. The farm changed hands over three generations, from Joseph to his son John, followed by John's son George. Ireland House was occupied by Joseph and his descendants up until 1985. |
