| Commentaires : | The Redeemer in Death can be seen at the front of the sanctuary in the Basilica Cathedral, beneath the Altar of Sacrifice. This sculpture is one of the most revered and valuable statues in the Basilica, and was sculpted in Carraran marble by Irish sculptor John Hogan in 1850. This sculpture was purchased by Right Rev. J.T. Mullock for $2000 on one of his visits to Rome, from money that Bishop Fleming bequeathed in his will for a statue. This statue was first placed beneath the table of the High Altar on March 19th, 1855. Since that time however, the statute was been moved twice, first when the Sanctuary was expanded in 1903, then again when it was moved to its present location in the early 1970's. This statue is known to be Hogan's masterpiece, for it's detail and fine artistry. Bertel Thorvaldsen, a great Danish master of statuary, pronounced it as proof that Hogan was the next-best sculptor in Rome (after himself). |
