Commentaires : | These are two .50 calibre cartridges from the Debert Ammunition Dump explosion. Camp Debert opened in April 1941 and was used as a staging and training area for overseas deployment during World War II. The site also functioned as an ammunition storage facility. After World War II, Debert was still used as an army training facility. However, by the mid-1960s Debert was downsized; the ammunition depot closed in 1965. By the late 1960s, Camp Debert had become a detachment of Canadian Forces Base Halifax. Although the site briefly separated in the 1990s, the base was closed July 15, 1996. Cartridges consist of five components: a bullet, a case, a propellant -e.g. gunpowder, a rim used to load the cartridge, and a primer which ignites the propellant. When a cartridge is loaded into a gun, the case creates a seal in the firing chamber so that when the primer sparks and ignites the propellant, the expanding gases force the projectile down the barrel. These center-fire cartridges meaning the primer is centrally located. |
