Commentaires : Thank you letter to Ms. Barton, April 15, 1999: "...We will have the painting cleaned and I anticipate hanging it in a refurnished building at one of our national historic sites...The painter has been identified as Lionel mcDonald Stpehenson. The following quotation is taken from the exhibition catalogue '150 Years of Art in Manitoba';'...b.1854, France, educated in English military college and France. Left with family for winnpeg, 1885. Executed numerous naive oil paintings, mostly of Fort Garry, for sale to troops from the East in the Riel Rebellion. Reproduced these, perhaps after earlier paintings or photographs, in countless numbers, arbitrarily dated. He died in 1907 in Winnipeg. Signed his works LMS.'...Accordingly we can date this painting to the period between 1885 and 1907.
