Description : 1st Nation wampum belt-2800 beads, white & purple; Design:- white bead background with a purple bead peace pipe (or tomahawk) sited horizontally in the centre, with two purple bead horizontal lines running along the edges of the belt. White beads are symbolic of peace, It has been sugested that this is a MI'KMAQ [MicMac] Peace Treaty Belt but this is open to discussion as designs similar to the central pattern are known to have been used on Algonquin material during the early period. Consists of twelve rows each of about 233 beads. Total ~ 2800 beads. Provenence clearly defined; known to have been purchased over forty years ago in the area of Sutton, Quebec by the party (?) who subsequently sold it to Mr. Hendler. Beads - The belt has been examined by Dr. Gordon M. Day - National Museum - opinion that the beads date from the early 17thC, genuine wampum beads made from clam shells peculiar to the Gardner and Oyster Bay areas of Long Island, N.Y. Two areas the only source of shells suitable for the manufacture of this type of bead. X-ray examination of the belts shows that they are a mixture of double and single bored beads which confirms this dating with the possibility that the double bored beads may pre-date this period, The combination of these two types of beads was quite normal in early belts. This belt contains four or five porcelain beads and several bird bone beads which may have been introduced during later repair work. X-ray defraction tests show the principal ingredient to be calcium with a small amount of strontium and some traces of lead. The latter may be due to the presence of the porcelain Stringing:- "recently" restrung using a thick soft type of twine which has been in common use for the past 70 years or so; the design is intact and the belt is very tight.
