Description : Round, scoop neck edged with 3/8" lace, very narrow band for drawstring and band covered with feather stitching. Bodice has a "V" 5" x 4.25" made up of 7 rows 'tight' embroidery and edged with 1 row highlighted by feather stitching. A ruffle 1 5/8" wide goes from waist band to center back opening. Ruffle has 3 pin tucks edged with lace. Back placket is 13" long, reinforced at lower end. Closure by 2 drawstrings - one at neck and one at waist + cotton button and hook at neck placket and narrow waist band covered with feather stitching. Sleeves are lightly gathered with lace edging at cuffs and feather stitching on the band. Cotton fabric loop at shoulder seams. Center front has insert made up of 6 rows of pin tucks edged in lace; another group pin tucks and a ruffle. Insert is edged 2.5" pin tucks in a ruffle edged with edge and feather stitching. Skirt is tightly gathered to waist band. Two groups of 7 pin tucks go around hem of dress. 1.75" hem. Double felled seams. Hand sewn.
Fonctions : Worn by Frank Arthur Kidston Walker (Dorothy's father). b. Leeds in 1887, m. 1920 Gertrude Andrews, Pontefract, Yorkshire. Frank and his 2 brothers moved to Canada in 1909. Frank met Gertrude when he was the office boy at Ackworth school where he father was headmaster. Frank ran the store at Sheffield mills from 1913-1922 and then moved to Chipman's Brook. His brothers were Eveleigh b. 1880 and William Fennel b. 1883. There were also 2 girls in the family. Their mother walked out on her husband and five children and went to London. She was 19 when married. Very difficult childhood for the 5 children. Dorothy and Joan didn't know they had a grandmother in London.
