Description : Photo of King George VI inspecting troops in England. Third nurse from left is Rose King. Photo of nurses with Queen Elizabeth, Princess Elizabeth, and Princess Margaret Rose. Rose King not in photo. Photo of five nurses. Rose King not in photo.
Commentaires : Uniform belonged to Rosie Lillian King (b. 8 January 1901 in Oxford, NS, ninth child of 14; daughter of George L. and Clara Lillian [Blair] King of River Phillip). Graduated from Victoria General Hospital, Halifax, 1925. Worked 11 years in Toronto General Hospital. In 1940, joined Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps and served in England. She received two citations: Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp; Defence Medal. Returned to Canada in 1943 and was matron of Debert Military Hospital. In May 1948, she was matron of Malton Convalescent Hospital in Ontario. Then she served 17 years as matron of nurses at Camp Hill in Halifax from 1949-1966. Her uniforms were all stored in the attic of her brother's house. During our search for uniforms for our "In Appreciation We Remember" show of 1995 (50th anniversary of the end of 1945), Winnie (King) Horton called Betsy Sheffield and donated the uniforms. We used the Burberry coat and crepe dress uniform in the show. Winnie also has the cape (probably made by Simpsons of London, England, since the lining is identical to the Burberry coat), plus the VGH gold pin and a jewelled RCAMC pin. Winnie was the niece of Rose King.
