Description : A straight-sided round brass bowl, rounded to a circular base; hand decorated with engraving and repousse. The upper border design are shallow forward slashes, deep pots in shallow circles, and deep upright forward/convex slashes. The main design consists of four cat-like bushy tailed creatures alternated with fern-type foliage, defined by lines and tine circles in reverse. The lower border consists of shallow circles, and shallow forward slashes.
Fonctions : The brass bowl appears to have been used by the Harris family as a vase. The bowl had been hand decorated using repousse which is an ancient art of embossing or pressing shapes into metal to create a design. This technique has been common for thousands of years especially those that make jewellery and religious icons. The word repousse is a French word which means 'to push out'.
